Meet Joanna Kaminski, LMFT,

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) specialist, and couple’s counselor who works with people in New York City and throughout NY state.

The foundation of my approach focuses on identifying your unique strengths. Together we will uncover your strengths. Then we’ll build on these strengths so that you can:

  • Develop a better understanding of yourself.
  • Learn new ways to solve issues.
  • Set healthy boundaries with others in your life.
  • Overcome trauma and heal.
  • Have healthier relationships.

My approach uses elements of Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Structural-Strategic Family Therapy.

I believe that we can learn from our past, achieve a better understanding of our patterns of behavior and view our lives with a new perspective. As you gain clarity and understanding, you will begin to feel more in control of your life story and its meaning.

Throughout my decade of experience as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I’ve come to view therapy as a puzzle. You have all of the possible pieces that you need, sometimes you just need someone to help you put the pieces in the right place.

I also offer therapy in Polish, my native language.

MY THERAPY STYLE

I generally tell clients to try a few sessions, and see how they feel about it. There is no pressure involved and I am accepting of the client’s feelings and wishes.

I’ve been formally trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which I find to be useful when working with both individuals and couples.

When I’m able to make a genuine connection with a client in terms of understanding them as best as possible.

The mythologist Joseph Campbell noted that there is a common humanity within all of our nervous systems out of which we all act as a people. This simple reality goes a long way to building bridges.

My Polish background gives me already a different perspective and knowledge of being “different,” and I’m finding this to be comforting for some clients.
