“Learning to meet your own needs is a powerful tool for change.”

Do you struggle to manage symptoms of distress? You may experience physical discomfort, intrusive thoughts, or harmful behavior patterns.

With a history of trauma, or “toxic stress”, practicing coping skills can be difficult. Learning to calm yourself down may feel impossible.

With practice, you can manage unwanted symptoms to create relief and improve life satisfaction. All people heal at their own pace, and all people can learn to reduce their own suffering.

Meet Monica Amorosi, CCTP, NCC, LMHC,
    Licensed Psychotherapist

I am a licensed trauma therapist and I provide teletherapy to individuals in New York City and throughout New York state.  My specialty is developing distress tolerance, or making stress feel less overwhelming. I work with clients aged 5-18, 18+ as individuals and/or families.

Stress exists as a necessary part of the human experience. For some, this experience has been more dangerous, disruptive, or overwhelming. In our sessions, I’ll provide the opportunity for you to reconnect with a sense of safety to move into a fuller life.

I practice from a combination of therapy models. I use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as the basis for skill building. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a guide for regulating the nervous system. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) builds a deeper connection to our authentic goals.

Working with these evidence-based models, I create a therapeutic space to help you:

    • Establish and practice interpersonal skills for use in relationships and conflict management.
    • Learn to understand and regulate feelings of discomfort, anxiety, and fear.
    • Develop a deeper sense of compassion towards yourself to reduce self-sabotaging behaviors.
    • Work through your trauma narrative, using skills to release tension trapped in your body.
    • Improve understanding and recognition of emotions to develop healthier means of expression.

Therapy is a bridge to a more fulfilling life. Finding a safe way to explore the most painful parts of your experience can be risky but rewarding.

If you feel ready, please reach out today for a complimentary 30-minute phone session.

    TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Are you ready to grow and expand into the life you want?

    MY THERAPY STYLE

I create a balance of process-based (talking) and practice-based (skills) work. I teach clients about trauma and help them apply strategies to improve how they feel. We explore symptoms in your body, thoughts, and actions to find healthier ways to function.

Each client has their own markers of change, and everyone moves through therapy at their own pace. A client may feel less overwhelmed, have better control over their thoughts, and manage their emotions better.

Therapy should be flexible to meet you where you are. For some, they may be ready to dive right into deep processing. For many, it is a slow process that requires building trust with your therapist. Curiosity about therapy could show that you are ready to start. Learning to seek out therapy before a crisis is a great form of self-care!

There is no one model of therapy that is “correct”. Instead, all models of therapy piece together like a puzzle. In my practice, the purpose of therapy is to learn about yourself, build self-compassion, and apply strategies to improve life engagement.
