"You're allowed to have the life you’ve always wanted."

Are you feeling consumed or overwhelmed by difficult to manage emotions? Or maybe you can’t turn off your racing thoughts? You might also be feeling stuck and struggling to make important decisions.

Nobody should struggle alone. My goal is to provide you with a safe, trustworthy, and non judgemental space. Together we’ll harness your inner strength and resilience so that you begin to experience greater self-compassion, motivation, and confidence.

    Meet Courtney Cohen, LMHC,
    Licensed Psychotherapist

I am a licensed mental health counselor in New York State who works with individuals and families. I specialize in helping teens and adults with anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, trauma, life transitions, and helping you feel more in control of your emotions.

I provide my clients with concrete and valuable tools, as well as a greater understanding into their behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that contribute to self-defeating patterns and conflicted relationships. In the safety of this open environment, you’ll be able to explore new ways of living that are free from anxiety, nagging self-doubt and criticism.

My approach to therapy is integrative and tailored to you  based on your unique needs. Working from an antiracist and LGBTQ+ affirmative lens; I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic techniques, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

If any of this resonated, I’d love to learn more about you. Reach out today for a complimentary 30-minute phone consultation so that together we can help you create the life you’ve always wanted.

    MY THERAPY STYLE

It is a scary thing to be vulnerable and open up when starting therapy. Making the decision to walk into the room itself takes strength and courage. By honoring this strength and allowing space for our fears, we can begin to build a safe compassionate space for your journey towards a more fulfilling life. Like anything in life, I encourage my clients to test it out, after all we learn what we like and don’t like through experiences. What do you have to lose from giving therapy a chance? Building a relationship can take a little bit of time and is different for all so I always take the time to discuss with my clients what feels right for them. There’s no one size fits all approach to therapy, and as we move along in your journey we can tailor our work together as needed.

Witnessing my clients recognize and use the strength and resilience that they had within them all along. Throughout the therapeutic process you will be tapping into strengths you already possess to help you reach your goals, my job is simply to help you harness these strengths. These moments of awareness and insight are so inspiring for not only my clients, but also myself as a therapist. It’s a privilege to be a trusted confidant in your journey towards a more fulfilling and happy life.

My style is active and collaborative – I work with you to explore current and new ways of thinking and living. However this varies on an individual basis depending on each client and is something we will discuss early on in the therapeutic relationship. After all, this is your space and it is important to me to know what is most useful for you.

Sometimes it’s helpful to apply the work we do in session to your everyday life outside. In these instances, activities or assignments may be useful. Typically, these are insight-driven assignments focused on raising awareness to topics or concepts we may have recently discussed in previous sessions.

The therapeutic relationship is arguably one of the most important parts of therapy, and for this reason I strive to be authentic and genuine with all clients. The therapeutic relationship is however different than those we have with friends or loved ones. In order to provide a safe space that allows my clients to thrive, I may share as it is relevant and helpful to our work together.

Even with clients who may be from a similar background, it is essential to be aware of the different experiences that each individual will bring with them into the room. Different backgrounds bring unique ways of viewing the world, and it is my goal to try my best to understand and dive into yours. I strive to keep an open mind and ask questions, making no assumptions.
