"Your past does not have to set the pattern for your future."

By reading this, by having embarked on the search for a therapist (even if tentatively), you have already taken the first step toward changing your life for the better.

It’s true, life can be complicated sometimes. You may be feeling stressed, unfulfilled, confused, or may find it hard to achieve deeper and more meaningful connections with others, even – or especially – with the people closest to you. Most concerning of all may be a nagging feeling that you yourself are unwittingly doing something to sabotage your happiness – that you are unable to break out of some repetitive, counterproductive pattern of behaving or relating that undermines your own well-being.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Things don’t have to stay static, and the past does not always have to set the pattern for the future. Therapy can bring change and a more meaningful and fulfilling life by helping you discover what you really want and how to become more effective in pursuing your goals. You can learn to be kinder to yourself, and to relate more authentically and enjoyably to others.

Meet Dr. Dimitri Mellos, Ph.D,
Clinical Psychologist

I am a licensed clinical psychologist who works with young adults and individuals of every age group in New York City and throughout NY state. I specialize in helping my clients navigate life’s challenges and find fulfillment in their romantic, personal, and professional lives.

My own multicultural identity and extensive background in the arts also inform and guide my practice, and make me particularly attuned to cross-cultural issues as well as issues related to creativity. I have experience helping individuals from multicultural backgrounds who experience identity concerns or acculturation challenges, as well as individuals who are trying to navigate the challenges and frustrations entailed in a career in the creative arts.

I draw from psychodynamic, existential, and attachment-based therapy approaches. My approach is best suited to those not seeking readymade, cookie-cutter answers to life’s dilemmas, but to those who are curious about their inner lives and the complexity of the human condition. By listening to you sensitively and empathically I can help you:

  • Hear and understand yourself better
  • Get in touch with, accept, and pursue your true desires
  • Let go of self-defeating behaviors and unlock your full potential
  • Improve your relationship with yourself and others

I am keenly aware that engaging in therapy takes courage, and it’s not always easy to open up to another. I approach each person who comes to see me with genuine interest, acceptance, warmth and compassion, and provide a safe environment in which one’s authentic self can be nurtured and allowed to bloom.

If you are curious and want to learn more about what it might be like to work together, I encourage you to reach out today for a complimentary 30-minute consultation.

I also offer therapy in Greek, my native language.

TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Are you ready to grow and expand into the life you want?

MY THERAPY STYLE

My style is always warm but challenging when needed, and my way of relating is direct and authentic, and often playful and humorous. This journey of self-discovery and growth is a truly collaborative partnership. I don’t view the therapist’s role as that of a well-meaning guide making decisions on your behalf; instead, my aim is to nurture and foster your own autonomy and freedom of choice in life.

Absolutely. Paradoxically, therapy is one of the few professions where one feels they did a good job when they are no longer needed. The purpose of therapy is to eventually become unnecessary; it is like a ladder that you use to rise higher, and then you can safely discard.

If a client has achieved their therapeutic goals and feel ready to terminate, I encourage them and facilitate a smooth transition out of therapy, while letting them know that the door is always open should they need to return.

I feel lucky because not only my education and training but also my own life experience has put me in a good position to have developed a very nuanced and sensitive understanding of diversity. I feel that sometimes in our culture diversity is only appreciated along certain basic dimensions, while others remain more unseen and unrecognized.

Being a white straight male who has nevertheless personally experienced “otherness” and at times exclusion because of my immigration experience, I have strong empathy for all dimensions of diversity and don’t shy away from openly discussing it – I’m a firm believer in always talking about the elephant in the room.
